Calculate Sale Price in Your Head: 2-Step Discount
A price tag shouting "20% off" hides the number you actually care about: what you will pay. Flip the discount and the math collapses into two easy steps. Or skip the arithmetic entirely and drop the original price into the discount mode of the calculator.
Step 1: Turn the discount into a pay-percent
The pay-percent is always 100 minus the discount. A 20% off tag means you pay 80%; 35% off means you pay 65%. Memorizing that single step unlocks every sale in your head.
Step 2: Multiply the pay-percent by the price
For most retail prices, work in 10% slices:
- Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left.
- Scale it. Pay 80%? Eight × the 10% figure. Pay 65%? Six and a half × the 10% figure.
On a $120 jacket at 20% off: 10% is $12, pay 80% means eight × $12 = $96.
Spot the fake sale
The same flip exposes marketing tricks. "Was $200, now $170" is only a 15% cut, not the "huge clearance" it feels like. Use the percent-change mode to see the real number — most shoppers overestimate a price cut by roughly half.
Stacked discounts don't add
"Extra 10% off" after a 30% sale is not 40%. It is 30% then 10% of the remainder — a 37% total cut. Multiply the two pay-percents: 0.70 × 0.90 = 0.63, so you pay 63%, a 37% saving. The discount mode handles the pile-up faithfully; a calculator won't be fooled.
